Breaking Down the Old Testament: What It Means for Us Today

Welcome to Living Word Cast, where we explore God’s Word and its transformative power for our lives today. I’m Pastor Michael Chilcott, and I’m thrilled to have you join me as we dive into one of the most foundational topics in Scripture: Breaking Down the Old Testament: What It Means for Us Today.

Understanding the Old Testament is essential for understanding the entire Bible. It lays the foundation for God’s relationship with humanity and points forward to Jesus Christ. Whether you’re new to the Bible or have studied it for years, this episode will help you see how every part of the Old Testament fits into God’s redemptive plan and what it means for Christians today.

The Old Testament, also called the Hebrew Bible, is the foundation of God’s revealed Word. It consists of 39 books, divided into five distinct sections. These books, written over approximately 1,000 years, provide a narrative of God’s covenantal relationship with humanity, particularly through the nation of Israel. Let’s explore each section.

The first five books, known as the Torah or Pentateuch, are the foundation of the entire Bible. They detail creation, humanity’s fall into sin, and God’s covenant relationship with Abraham and his descendants.

  • Genesis: Covers creation, the fall, the flood, and the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

  • Exodus: Chronicles God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt, the giving of the Law, and the establishment of the tabernacle.

  • Leviticus: Focuses on holiness, outlining the sacrificial system and priestly duties.

  • Numbers: Tells the story of Israel’s wandering in the wilderness due to their disobedience.

  • Deuteronomy: Features Moses’ final speeches, reiterating the Law before entering the Promised Land.

Why it matters: The Torah reveals God’s holiness, humanity’s sinfulness, and the need for redemption.
